The Museum Store at the McNay has wonderful finds all year round, but is a particularly great place to shop during the holidays. There are no lines, the staff is friendly, the shelves are well-stocked, and there’s something (unique) for everyone on your list. Here, members of our staff share what they’re giving this year and what’s on their wishlists.
Heather Ferguson | Library and Archives Public Services Coordinator “The McNay store is my go-to place for holiday greeting cards. This year I was delighted to find these Andy Warhol inspired cards featuring the artist’s Christmas Tree, circa1957. I absolutely adore Warhol’s whimsical designs from the 1950s, which highlight his signature “blotted line” drawing/printing technique.”
Linda Robbins | Cashier “I chose this scarf for a friend. She loves blue and I love the print inspired by Matisse.”
Melissa Castellon | Executive Assistant to the Director “I’ve already given these bracelets to two different people and they’ve loved them. They’re inexpensive and they have a real high quality to them.”
Timothy Retzloff | Tobin Fund Intern in Theatre Arts “I chose this little stuffed pig for my new baby nephew because it’s never too early to start introducing them to the art and toys. And I chose this book of paper dolls for my nieces because they love creating things. I think it will be perfect for them.”
Artie McNay | McNay Mascot “I love all of theIntimate Impressionism-inspired gifts in the store this season, but especially these custom mugs featuring a painting by Monet. They’re a great way to remember the exhibition (which closes January 4!) and are perfect for the coffee or tea drinker (also good for lounging in).
Lisa Penn | Director of Human Resources “I like this oil mister because a lot of people that I know cook and do different things with salads, and this is great because you just open it up and spray it on!”
Genevieve Hulley | Semmes Foundation Intern in Museum Studies “I’m going to give my mom this book for Christmas because she loves the Impressionists and she loves Paris, so what better way to combine them than with a book that tells you where the Impressionist paintings were painted?!”
Sheena Solitaire | Museum Educator, Family & Public Programs “I picked this book, that conceptualizes letters as works of contemporary art, for my son because he’s fascinated by the alphabet and kids respond so well to contemporary art because it’s so open to imagination. I paired it with this old-school kaleidoscope because it’s overlooked, inexpensive, but it would occupy and fascinate him. For my baby girl, I chose Faces for Baby, which has a lot of great pictures and because babies are so fascinated by faces, so it’s a great way to get her to start looking at some art.”
Rick Frederick | Collections Management Assistant “I chose these science art sets for my neices and nephews. I never remember how old they are, but think that these would be fun at any age. The two involving images and cameras are for the boys and might inspire a conversation between brothers. The recycled paper beads kit is perfect for my niece because I know my brother and niece are very thrifty and it might be fun for them to make these together.”
Daniela Oliver de Portillo | Director of Communications and Marketing “I’m getting these cute little socks because I just had a little niece this month and I think it will be perfect for her to celebrate the holidays in such style. They’re adorable!” |
