For many years, a small parcel of land belonging to the McNay Art Museum has been disconnected from the museum’s 23-acre property thanks to a divide created by Rittiman Road.
But soon the two parcels will be reunited. On June 4, 2015, San Antonio City Council approved the permanent closure of a small portion of Rittiman Road. The closure will take place as soon as necessary improvements are completed along Austin Highway and North New Braunfels. Planned improvements will include re-engineering Austin Highway and North New Braunfels to create new turn lanes, which will, in turn, according to District 10 Councilman Mike Gallagher, provide an enhanced view of the museum from the street.
Gallagher and museum officials say the closure will create a safer entrance and exit to the museum as well as allow for more green space for the sculpture garden and other museum experiences.
