Free Teen Admission at the McNay

The McNay Art Museum is excited to announce that we now offer FREE TEEN ADMISSION for two years (2016-2017)! All teens ages 13-19 get in free any time and day the museum is open. This incredible opportunity is made possible by the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation, which donated $100,000 to the McNay, in an expansion to our free admission to children ages 12 and under. “Having these experiences at a young age greatly increases the likelihood that our youth will have a lifelong appreciation for different artistic disciplines. Providing free admission to teens grants them the opportunity to have rich encounters with art that keep them coming back to museums throughout their lives,” said Director of Education, Kate Carey.

To announce the museum’s new teen admission policy, the McNay has partnered with SAY Si’s Media Art Program students to create a promotional video. SAY Si is a local organization that provides a year-round, non-profit multidisciplinary arts program for students in the San Antonio area. The McNay has a history of collaboration with the SAY Si program, and admires the professionalism and perspective they bring to the table, especially for the teen admission promotional video.

“The appealing thing about working with them in this instance, is that we were virtually working with the students that would be our audience,” said Carey. “So we were working with teenagers and teens that we would want to attract. And it was great because SAY Si has students filling all the roles that you would in a very professional commercial shoot. At one of these idea meetings, they pitched three different possibilities, and they call them scripts. I liked that they gave us options, and I think that’s what would happen in a professional environment.”

The McNay serves approximately 6,500 adolescents through an annual teen night (scheduled this year for Friday, April 1, 2016 – 7 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.), teens visiting on school tours or with their families, and the Teen Art Guide program (TAGs), the McNay’s teen volunteer core.

“The McNay Art Museum’s mission is to engage a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts, and we are grateful for the opportunity to expand and grow our audience,” said McNay Director William J. Chiego.
