Inspired by the exhibition Wayne Thiebaud 100: Paintings, Prints and Drawings, the McNay challenges followers and fans to get creative! Thiebaud highlighted the beauty and drama of everyday objects from slices of pies to a collection of bowties. Take a cue from Thiebaud’s playful style and look for sweets, multiples, and shadows in the world around you. Snap a pic, submit, and look for your photo in the exhibition or on McNay social channels.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Grab a camera or phone.
  2. Photograph one (or more!) of three themes: sweets, multiples, or shadows.
  3. Submit your photos one of two ways.
    • Instagram: Post your photo with #ThiebaudPhotoChallenge AND #Thiebaud100. If you share in stories, tag @mcnayart.
    • Web: Click the ‘Submit Photo’ button on this page and complete the form.
  4. The McNay will share selections here and on a monitor within the exhibition.

Theme 1: Sweets

Wayne Thiebaud painted luscious desserts from layer cakes and banana splits to cream pies and rainbow lollipops. He even whipped his paint to resemble icing. What kind of sweets strike your fancy? Something from your own kitchen, a local bakery, or the dessert menu? Share a sweet treat.

Theme 2: Multiples

Thiebaud played with rhythm and pattern when depicting groups of everyday things like sunglasses and bowties. Do you have a collection of similar treasures ready for their closeup? Line them up and show them off.

Theme 3: Shadows

Shadows in Wayne Thiebaud’s artwork are colorfully dramatic. Bright spotlighting casts hues of blue and purple, edged in orange and gold. Hunt for interesting shadows in your world.
