Munch at the McNay: Two Spring Presentations

Featuring the Norwegian Modern Master

Rare Munch Work on Paper and Oils on Canvas Now on View at the First Modern Art Museum in Texas

San Antonio, TX (March 28, 2019) – This spring, the McNay Art Museum offers two opportunities to enjoy expressionist works by Edvard Munch. Best known for his iconic masterpiece, The Scream, it is rare to see multiple Munch works on view at the McNay. A striking work on paper can be found in the exhibition Van Gogh to Munch: Seduction and Anxiety in the Lawson Print Gallery, and three paintings are featured in the installation Love and Anguish: The World of Edvard Munch in the Halff Gallery.

Van Gogh to Munch
traces the development of art focused on the inner world of the human mind; from Vincent van Gogh’s penetrating portrait of his last medical doctor to a claustrophobic brothel interior by Munch. The exhibition is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lyle Williams, Curator of Prints and Drawings, and is on view until May 5, 2019. Lead funding is most generously provided by the Elizabeth Huth Coates Exhibition Endowment and the Arthur and Jane Stieren Fund for Exhibitions.

“The late nineteenth century was such a rich and complex period for art,” said Williams. “In a way it mirrors what is happening in our own time, with an amazing range of artistic styles and expression.”

Love and Anguish: The World of Edvard Munch
is on view through November 17, 2019. The installation features three Munch works on canvas. Kneeling Female Nude and The Kiss are on loan from the Blaffer Foundation, and Girls on the Pier is on loan from the Kimbell Art Museum. The special installation also features complementary sculptures from the McNay’s collection.

“We do not have Munch paintings in the McNay collection, and are thrilled to have so many rare works on view for the community to enjoy,” said Heather Lammers, McNay Collections Manager and Curator.
