In our Summer Q&A series, we profile members of the McNay staff to show a behind-the-scenes look at all the people who make the McNay what it is! Today’s post is extra special, as we feature Juan Cervantes, who retired this month after 33 years as a Gardener at the McNay. We are known for our magnificent grounds and courtyard, and we are endlessly thankful for Juan’s decades of service and expertise in keeping the McNay beautiful.
 

In your 33 years of working at the McNay, what has been your favorite memory?
Simply tending to my courtyard. Taking care of all my plants, seeing them grow and sharing their beauty with the museum visitors.

What is one thing about the McNay you wish everyone knew?
There is a stone sculpture of a lion* on our grounds that people don’t often find. I really like it. 

What are you most excited to do in retirement?
Having time to myself and resting. Sleeping in! I regularly get up at 4:00 AM to make it to the McNay and work before it gets too hot, so now I will get to get up at 9:00 am. I also look forward to tending to my own yard and I’ll be working for some yard clients on the side as well just to keep me a little active.
