McNay Art Museum to Host Free Community Conversation Teens and Remaking LGBTQ IdentityFeaturing Sociologist and Author Mary Robertson

WHAT: Based on interviews conducted at an LGBTQ youth drop-in center, Sociologist Mary Robertson wrote Growing up Queer: Kids and the Remaking of LGBTQ Identity, to explore the changing ways youth are identifying in the US. Robertson focuses on the voices and stories of youths themselves in order to show how young people understand their sexual and gender identities, their interest in queer media, and the role that family plays in their lives.

Aimed at youth and their families, this Community Conversation, moderated by Robertson, examines the changing ways youth are understanding their genders and sexualities, and the importance of support from family, friends, and schools. This program is a great opportunity for safe and open discussion as youth and educators head back to school.

Books signed by the author will be available for purchase in the Museum Store.

This conversation is free and open to the public. It is hosted in conjunction with the McNay’s current exhibition,Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today, which is on view until September 15.

Jeremiah Flores: Jeremiah Flores is a high school student who has been openly gay since the age of 11. Jeremiah faced a lot of ridicule in school for having two moms, but to him it didn’t make a difference—they were all one happy family. Though his moms are no longer together, Jeremiah still continues to face struggles, although he powers through them in spite of any negativity.

Grace Flores: Grace is Jeremiah’s mother. She is openly bisexual and was married to a woman for 7 years. Grace is fully supportive of her son and his identity, and continues to support him to be the best person he can be.

Adam Sauceda: Adam Sauceda is a licensed professional counselor who works with a diverse clientele. His main focus has been working with transgender and gender diverse children, adolescents, adults, and families. Mr. Sauceda strives to provide a safe space to explore gender expression and gender identity.

Grey Gamboa: Grey Gamboa is the Association of Art Museum Director’s Diversity Intern at the McNay Art Museum. This summer he has assisted with Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today. Born and raised in San Antonio TX, he started his journey of gender identity and self-expression during high school in the Alamo City, and currently attends the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Radio, Television, and Film.
