In our Q&A series, we profile members of the McNay staff to show a behind-the-scenes look at all the people who make the McNay what it is! Today’s post features Julie McGarraugh, Senior Manager of Special Events.
What is your role at the McNay? Walk us through a typical workday in your shoes.
I am the Senior Manager of Special Events and oversee the Rental Department: which includes planning Museum fundraisers, member events, life events and more. No two days are the same, which keeps things fun! One day I might be in the office planning a fundraiser, and the next I’m doing a site visit with a DMC company and their client who is looking for a venue.
What do you like to do outside of work? What are your favorite things to do and places to go in San Antonio?
I love working in my yard. I also love attending my nieces and nephews sporting events. I am on the board of the SA Chapter of the International Live Events Association, so that keeps me pretty busy.
What has been your favorite exhibition at the McNay so far? Tell us why.
It’s a tie between Intimate Impressionism from the National Gallery of Art and Monet to Matisse: A Century of French Moderns. I love the beauty of Impressionist paintings and the delicate brush strokes.
What is one thing about the McNay you wish everyone knew?
Marion Koogler McNay was quite the entertainer! The first event she hosted in her home was a wedding reception for her cousin. I think she would be thrilled to know we still do quite a bit of entertaining 60+ years later!
