2020 CAM PERENNIAL: TOPOGRAPHIES OF TRUTH
OPENS AT McNAY ART MUSEUM ON FEBRUARY 13, 2020
Artwork from Nine San Antonio Artists On View Through May 17, 2020
San Antonio, TX (February 10, 2020) – The McNay, in collaboration with Contemporary Art Month (CAM) San Antonio, presents 2020 CAM Perennial: Topographies of Truth, featuring works by nine San Antonio-based artists. Selected by guest curator Lee Hallman, this exhibition celebrates the diverse and compelling artwork emerging from the region. Hallman is also Associate Curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
“It has been a pleasure and a privilege to discover the wealth of artistic talent thriving in San Antonio,” said Hallman. “The works on view are representative of the range of visual languages and points of view I encountered during my studio visits. The exhibition brings together artists whose practices engage—critically, humorously, earnestly or otherwise—with the complex world we live in.”
Although engaged in different processes and motivated by different interests, the artists in the exhibition share a spirit of curiosity and critical thought. Some works challenge unquestioned categories or confront historical biases. Other works investigate selfhood and identity. Works by several artists explore our relationship to nature, and the effects of media and technology on our ways of perceiving and understanding the world. Artists included in the exhibition are Jimmy James Canales, Anthony Francis, Nicholas Frank, Raul Gonzalez, Mari Hernandez, Megan Harrison, Buster Graybill, Jasmyne Graybill, and Amada Miller.
“The McNay is honored to present this year’s Perennial in collaboration with CAM,” said René Paul Barilleaux, McNay Head of Curatorial Affairs. “Hosting the exhibition strengthens the McNay’s ties with area artists and deepens our commitment to the community. Curator Lee Hallman has assembled a masterful group of works by both emerging and veteran artists, and the majority have not had their artwork exhibited at the McNay.”
The 2020 CAM Perennial marks the 34th year of Contemporary Art Month San Antonio, and the eighth edition of the exhibition itself. This presentation is the first time a CAM exhibition is on view at the McNay.
2020 CAM Perennial: Topographies of Truth is on view at McNay Art Museum from February 13 through May 17, 2020 in the Museum’s Frost galleries. The exhibition is included with general admission, including free general admission every Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. and the first Sunday of every month.
