For the past nine years, the McNay Art Museum has engaged students K–12 with a single work of art in the collection. This award-winning program invites students to respond creatively to a masterpiece in the holdings of the first modern art museum in Texas. This year, 1,549 students from 31 San Antonio area schools embraced Diego Rivera’s portrait of Delfina Flores, creating their own artworks in various media. Selections are on view in this exhibition, Spotlight: San Antonio’s K–12 Artists Embrace Diego Rivera. As part of the Spotlight program, McNay educators follow students through the creative process, provide in-classroom instruction, offer free museum tours, and lead hands-on experiences at school events. In May, the Museum displayed all 445 works produced by this year’s participants during the Spotlight Celebration weekend, about a third of which are on view here.
